Swiss soccer fans cause trouble in England

Bern Young Boys

Switzerland is exporting its soccer violence.

Trouble caused by travelling supporters has overshadowed Young Boys’ Europa League match at Aston Villa, in Birmingham, England.

Issues flared after Villa’s Donyell Malen celebrated his opening goal directly in front of the Bernese fans, prompting coins and other missiles to be thrown  -  one striking the player and causing a visible cut.

Police moved in as tempers rose, with seats and coins reportedly hurled toward the pitch.

The Young Boys captain, Loris Benito, tried to calm supporters but says a misunderstanding with officers triggered further escalation.

UEFA is now expected to issue a heavy sanction, with the Swiss club already viewed as a repeat offender.
