Thousands leave the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church is suffering a bout of resignations following the publication of a report which suggests hundreds of children were sexually abused by priests, which the church worked hard to cover up.

The study by the University of Zurich suggests there’s been around a thousand cases since 1950 – but likely to be far more.

Many cantons are reporting resignations from the church. In Zurich, 778 have left in just two weeks.

Catholic strongholds are not spared either, 160 went in the same period in Lucerne, 50 went in Zug and the small canton of Schwyz had 70 resignations.

The figures are from the Swiss Pastoral Sociological Institute. It says the leaving record set in 2021, when 34,000 left the church, is likely to be beaten.
