Three dead after avalanche

Three people were killed and another injured after a major avalanche in Zermatt yesterday.

Helicopters and sniffer dogs were used in the search for victims.

The avalanche hit an off-piste area below the Riffelberg station. The victims were skiing off-piste.

The head of Zermatt mountain rescue services, Bruno Jelk says some people had skied down a very steep slope which could have triggered the avalanche.

Extremely high avalanche alerts remain in force in Zermatt as well as other parts of Valais.

So far this year, 17 have died in avalanches.
