Could a train running from Geneva to London be feasible?
There are many issues – mainly technical – that could scupper the plan.
It is a question that Pascal Broulis, a Vaud member of the Council of States, will be asking the government today.
One of the major issues is that stations will need significant investment in passport controls as the UK is not in the EU or Schengen.
The government also notes that planned developments at Geneva station will make putting in immigration controls difficult.
Also, only trains operated by Eurostar can run in the Channel Tunnel – and Eurostar trains aren’t authorised to run on Swiss tracks.
But potential demand is not in doubt. London is the most popular destination – by far – for air traffic from Switzerland.
