Unions have lost their case at the European Court of Human Rights. On a technicality.
They had taken the government to the Strasbourg court claiming covid restrictions banning marches in 2020 was too strict – breaking the right of freedom of assembly.
Although the unions won in the first instance – the government appealed.
The Grand Chamber of the court then threw out the case, claiming unions had not exhausted all legal avenues in Switzerland before turning to the European Court.
Judges voted against the unions 12 to 5.
Unions say they’re disappointed by the outcome as it’s been decided on procedure and not the merits of the case.
