A company director in Geneva nearly fell for a highly sophisticated AI deep fake scam.
The Tribune de Genève reports that the man, who’s originally from Thailand, had a call from a number which was the same as the Thai embassy in Bern. He was told his passport had been stolen and was being used to set up bank accounts.
Over a video link he was shown documentation by a Thai police officer and told he needed to move his money to keep it safe.
It was a three-hour call. It was all fake.
The man noticed the police officer’s face changed shape when he turned. He called the embassy himself and found there was no record of his passport being stolen.
The Swiss Federal Cybersecurity Office says this type of long-form sophisticated scam is becoming more common.
