We each throw away, on average, 2.7 plastic items every day – and its most likely to be food packaging.
A major survey by Greenpeace, the biggest of its kind in this country, monitored nearly 12,000 people over the course of a week and counted how much plastic was used.
The biggest concern of the environmental group is that plastics used in food packing is the least likely to be recycled – less than 0.01%.
Out of the 45 items used by the average household each week, only 2 are recycled. 31 are incinerated and 10 exported.
Consumers say they’d like to see more alterative packaging and reusable items.
