Weekend protests in Geneva and Lausanne

Thousands of people marched in Geneva and Lausanne on Saturday to demand action on climate change after the summer's heatwaves

In Lausanne, organisers counted between 5,000 and 6,000 protesters walking behind a banner reading "Suffocating is not inevitable".

Environment Minister Albert Rösti was singled out for criticism, with placards mocking his handling of the climate portfolio and children carrying signs reading "No classrooms at 50 degrees".

The demonstrations mark the start of a wave of protests planned across Swiss cities through 2 October, with organisers warning temperatures could reach 50 degrees by 2050 without stronger measures.
