A new study has put a number on what most diners only guess at — 5 to 10% is the going rate for a tip in a Swiss restaurant.

Research by Bank Cler and the ZHAW university found that on a CHF 64.- bill, customers leave around CHF 4.- on average, while a CHF 112.- bill draws roughly CHF 7.-. 

Most don't actually calculate a percentage — they simply round up. 

The study also found that cash tippers tend to be more generous than card users, and that under-30s are the most unsure about what to leave. 

Service has been included in Swiss prices for decades, so tipping remains entirely optional.
