Almost 600,000 animals were used for animal testing in Switzerland last year.
That’s 1.6 percent more than the year before, according to the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office.
Mice, birds, fish and rats were used most frequently.
Also, the figures show there was a sharp increase in the use of pigs.
Around 42,000 pigs were used – that’s is 10 times as many as in 2022.
The reason for this is research in the field of animal health and welfare.
99 percent of the pigs were used in experiments didn’t involve stress, such as observational studies.
