Closure of airspace - right decision

The decision by Swiss air traffic control to close all the airspace in June was the right one, despite the significant delays it caused.

A technical breakdown meant controllers were unable to monitor planes entering Switzerland.

After the breakdown the government launched an independent inquiry by the Federal Transport Office.

It concluded it was right to close airspace and Skyguide – the company charged with monitoring airspace – worked diligently to fix the problem.

But the report also contained several recommendations for improvement.

The airspace closure led to the cancellation of around 100 flights and impacted air traffic across Europe and further afield.
