Traffic congestion on the autoroutes has reached a new record.
The Federal Roads Office says more than 68,000 hours of traffic jams were recorded on the national road network last year, a 22 percent increase on 2024.
Officials say growing traffic volumes are pushing key routes to their limits, with congestion no longer confined to rush hour.
The Federal Council plans to invest CHF 9bn road infrastructure by 2045, including widening sections of the A1.
But the proposals remain politically divisive, with environmental groups and motorists disagreeing on the solution.
