Copernicus reports hottest summer ever measured

Switzerland is in the grip of a level 3 heat alert, with Geneva heading for temperatures of up to 36°C on Friday.

MétéoSuisse declared the alert on Sunday and expects it to last at least five days, with the peak arriving at the end of the week. Fire danger has climbed to level four or five - high to very high - across much of the country.

Western Europe has just recorded its hottest start to summer ever measured, according to the Copernicus climate service, and this is the region's fourth extreme heat episode since May. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during the hottest hours and watch for signs of heat stress.
