The fall in temperatures and some rain is not enough to help the ski resorts - and forecasters say it could be the end of the season already.
Next week is the metrological start of spring.
Klaus Marquart of Meteo News told the Blick newspaper while it will get cooler over the next few days, there’ll be little snow and temperatures will remain above zero in many areas.
Even on the higher ground, he does say there will be some fresh snow, but it will be largely cosmetic.
As the weather has been so warm over the last few days the existing snow is too soft.
Christoph Marty from the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute calls the current situation ‘snow misery’.
The snow levels are up to 80% less than normal. That’s due to low precipitation – which he says happens around every decade anyway.
But he does say that while higher resorts will probably be okay in the future, lower lying ski areas could have more problems as temperatures rise.
But it’s school holiday at the moment and many kids are in the mountains – supposedly for a skiing holiday. But the lack of snow is leading to some radical plan changes.
Mountain biking, hiking and even museum trips are being organized.
