Free car charging ending in Geneva

It couldn’t last forever – free charging for electric cars in Geneva car parks is coming to an end.

The Fondation des Parkings was encouraged to offer free charging ten years ago by the canton to encourage the take up of electric cars. But now has become almost too successful and many cars stay attached to the cable even when the car is fully charged.

The director of the foundation, Damien Zuber, says he believes customers would prefer to have spaces available when they’re needed instead of free.

The amount charged for electricity is the same as a home rate – currently around 27 centimes for a kilowatt hour.
