‘Fruitful’ discussion over Swiss-EU relations

The Swiss Foreign Minister, Ignazio Cassis, has held what he has described as ‘fruitful’ talks in Brussels over Switzerland’s relationship with the European Union.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said that the minister met the Vice-President of the European Commission yesterday for discussions that are hoped will ultimately result in the adoption of a framework treaty between Switzerland and the EU.

The EU wants to agree a set of principles over political and economic ties with Switzerland to replace the current bilateral agreements between the two. Switzerland walked away from negotiations in 2021 but has since held 10 rounds of talks to get discussions back on track.

This latest meeting follows the adoption of key parameters for the negotiating mandate by the Swiss government a few weeks ago.
