Geneva is the only canton which has banned hunting. The decision was taken in the 1970s to make sure the woods are freely available to everyone.
But the canton has a deer problem. Numbers are climbing and they’re damaging the forests and eating crops.
It’s thought there are around 160 in the Versoix woods – but they’re part of a large group ranging from canton Jura to the Pays de Gex.
As hunters can’t kill the animals, cantonal gamekeepers will shoot deer at night – so the forest can stay safe during the day.
The exact number to be killed hasn’t yet been determined. The culling will start on December 1st and go on until the end of January.
