The Geneva University Hospital has revealed a series of measure to save power over the winter.
It will make sure all unnecessary lights will be switched off – the sign on the outside of the building has already been switched off.
The hospital points out that lighting is 30% of its energy costs.
Motion sensors are being installed to automatically switch off lights in unoccupied rooms. Some escalators have been switched off and staff are being urged to use the stairs and not the lifts if possible.
The temperature in common areas will be dropped by a degree to 20 – but areas where patients are recovering will not be affected.
A hospital spokesman says their aim is to cut energy consumption by 30% - but it’s unlikely to be met this year.
