There are worries the winter wasn’t cold enough to allow for the mixing of the waters of Lake Geneva.
It should be a natural process every year. Cold weather and high winds mean the surface water drops to the lower depths of the lake, carrying with it oxygen which is vital for the life which exists at deeper levels.
But it’s been the same for the last few years – and experts say the situation is becoming critical.
If the waters don’t mix next season, that would mean 13 years without mixing.
Other lakes in the country are suffering the same problem, but oxygen is injected into the waters – but Lake Geneva is the largest lake in Western Europe and it’s simply too big.
