A carpool lane is set to be introduced at the busy Bardonnex border crossing between France and Geneva.
The ATMB autoroute operator says the lane, on the French side of the crossing, could open as early as September.
It will run from five in the morning until noon for cars carrying at least two passengers, aiming to ease heavy commuter traffic.
The project will reuse a former truck lane.
Officials say a similar system at Thônex-Vallard has already helped reduce congestion and encourage carpooling.
On the Swiss side, there are also plans for a car pool lane - but work won't start on that for another three years.
