The Federal Council has tightened the rules for imposing 30 km/h zones on city streets, requiring cantons to prove that a slowdown will not push traffic into residential neighbourhoods

The change was broadly backed in consultation and takes effect from 1 October. It marks a federal check on the pace at which cities have been lowering speed limits.
