A new apartment complex is creating some controversy due to the high rents – with many residents aghast that prices have become so high.

The Zurich Insurance company has built 270 new homes in Wiedikon.

The high-end flats range from 5 rooms to 2 and a half.

For the biggest, the rents start at CHF 6,400 a month – the smallest CHF 3,400.

Social media is full of comments asking how can people afford those prices and complain ordinary people are being driven out of the city centres.

The head of the tenants’ association, Asloca, in canton Vaud, Fabrice Berney says urban centres are experiencing the strongest growth and as there’s a shortage – developers are taking advantage to hike rents.

He’s calling on the authorities to cap rents.
