The time frames are immense – but plans have been revealed on a new nuclear waste storage site, which, by law, has to be viable for a million years.
The engineering firm, Nagra, has submitted plans to the government for a deep level storage site which will be built in canton Zurich.
It will eventually store 1,600 cubic meters of high-level waste and 100,000 m3 of low to medium level waste.
It will be nearly a kilometre deep.
The commune of Stadel, near Zurich Airport, has been chosen due to the stability of the rock.
The total cost will be around CHF 20bn and construction will start in 2045. It’s virtually certain there will have to be vote at some point – probably in 2031.
