Mafia very active in Switzerland

Mafia activity is widespread across Switzerland and more concentrated in German speaking areas than Ticino.

Figures from the Federal Police Office published by the Aargauer Zeitung shows authorities have been aware of mafiosi settling around Lake Zurich for many years.

More evidence is surfacing about violent acts by the criminal gang. A triple murder in Basel in 1992 was first classed as a domestic dispute. Now police suspect it may be mafia related. 

A federal police operation filmed several mafia members meeting in Frauenfeld in canton Thurgau, disguised as a sporting meeting. 

 The scale of the mafia in Switzerland has been underestimated in recent years, according to the government.

The head of the Federal Police Office, Nicoletta della Valle, says more international cooperation is needed to tackle organised crime.
