One in five in the country feel they’re not integrated into society – and it’s most acute in the French and Italian speaking areas of the country.
The study by the University of Zurich shows social exclusion is a significant issue for many, and for a smaller proportion, a major problem. 3% say they don’t feel part of society at all.
It mainly affects those under 30 and over 61.
Researchers have been surprised that income and unemployment do not seem to have a major impact – but the level of education does make a change.
Why there are more feeling isolated in the French and Italian areas is unclear, according to the university. There’s also little difference between men and women.
The findings have been published in the Cologne Journal of Sociology. The survey was mainly carried out before the full impact of Covid.
