Despite this country being one of the richest in the world – 5% of the population are deprived.
Figures from the Federal Statistics Office say they have to skip essential expenses at times – such as clothing and meals.
But this figure is far lower than the European average of 11%.
The main people affected are foreigners and single parents.
The Caritas charity is calling on the government to do more, saying poverty levels have increased since 2014 and demand for their services is increasing.
They say the government and the cantons should help tackle the impact of inflation on lower income groups.
