Move to change tax system in Geneva

The Swiss People’s Party in Geneva has filed an initiative which would have a profound change on how Geneva citizens are taxed if it passes.

Currently the tax people pay in the canton, which is unique in the country, is split between where they live and where they work.

The initiative is called ‘I live there, I pay there’ and the tax collected will only go to the commune in which the resident lives.

Campaigners collected 6,300 signatures – a thousand more than needed to force it to a vote.

The party argues the communes pay for schools and local infrastructure and need the extra cash.

The vote is likely to happen in the middle of next year.
