A Liberal Party member of parliament is proposing new arrivals to Switzerland should pay an extra 3% tax for their first 11 years in the country. Such a tax could raise a billion francs a year.
Simon Michael is proposing the new tax as an alternative to the Swiss People’s Party No to 10 Million’ initiative.
He’s also trying to get the Socialists on board.
The tax is based on the tax that those who are unable to participate in the army have to pay.
But the Greens are against the idea – they point out the country needs immigrants in the healthcare and construction sectors.
The Federal Council is also against.
