Public broadcasting under new threat

Supporters of public service broadcasting are worried after the new Federal Councillor, Albert Rösti, says he wants a general evaluation of the SSR within a year with an overview of its future.

Rösti currently holds the communication portfolio, so he’s in charge of broadcasting policy.

His position is completely different from his predecessor, Simonetta Sommaruga, who was working on a new mandate for public broadcasting.

Signatures are still being collected for an initiative called ‘200 francs is enough’. The main aim is to cut the current license fee paid by households for the SSR from the current CHF 365 to CHF 200.

Before joining the Federal Council, the minister was a member of the initiative committee.
