A parliamentary committee is recommending the law should be changed to allow shops to open for twelve Sundays a year – up from the current four.
The Economic Affaires Committee says it’s a moderate solution that responds to the changing needs of the population and will help stores fight the fierce competition from online commerce.
But unions remain implacably against any change to Sunday trading laws.
Thomas Bauer from Travail Suisse says for workers, Sundays are the only common day off during the week. It says many use the day to maintain relationships and take part in activities.
It still needs to be voted on by the Council of States.
