SIG will start installing smart meters

The Geneva utility company, the SIG, says it will start installing electricity smart meters next month.

It’s hoped 15,000 homes will be connected by 2025 – then the roll out will increase until at least 80% of households are connected. 

The move is on the back of a change in the national energy law, which was agreed by voters in 2017.

The meters mean electricity use can be monitored in real time.

While it won’t be compulsory to have a smart meter installed, the SIG says it may charge an administrative fee for those who stay with the old system.
