The right-wing Swiss People’s Party is calling for an end to the protected status of Ukrainians who fled the war and are living in Switzerland.
There are nearly 70,000 Ukrainians benefitting from the scheme.
Shortly after the outbreak of the war, the government created a new permit status - the ‘S’ permit - which gave Ukrainians the right to live and work. It was mainly used by women and children.
But the Swiss People’s Party is calling for the permit to be abolished and those in the country should now be processed under the asylum procedures so people who actually need protection get it.
But the party is unlikely to find enough support in parliament for its motion.
The Social Democrats says the move is ‘irresponsible’ and the Liberals say it’s 'premature'.
The government announced last year the status would continue until 2026 - and says it’s examining if it should be extended until 2027.
