Switzerland is seeing a boom in data centres - more than 15 new ones are under construction, partly to power artificial intelligence.
With over 120 already operating, they use about 7% of the country’s electricity, a figure that could double by 2030. This country has one of the highest number of centres on a per capita basis in Europe.
A new survey for the NGO Algorithmwatch Switzerland shows growing public concern over energy and water use, and a lack of transparency from operators.
Nearly three-quarters of respondents say new centres should rely only on renewable energy, and many want stricter government oversight.
