'The Night is Beautiful' light switch off planned

‘The Night is Beautiful’. And so we can all experience it, there will be a general switch off of public lighting on the night of the 21st May.

It was last held in September 2019 – and was deemed only a partial success as lighting from private premises – mainly shops in town centres – stayed on.

This time more private businesses are being urged to take part.

This switch-off will centre around the Greater Geneva area which includes parts of canton Vaud and neighbouring France.

Almost 300 communes have agreed to take part, stretching from Vaud to Haute-Savoie.

The aim is to cut light pollution which will give a better view of the night sky and raise awareness of the affect artificial light has on wildlife.

It’s also hoped more communes will bring in wider night-time switch offs. Already several cut their street lighting at night anyway. It saves money, helps wildlife and what may be seen as counter-intuitive, cuts crime.
