Left wing political parties and unions in Geneva are to launch a referendum against plans by the canton to allows shops to open longer on Saturday and for three Sundays a year.
The campaigners say it means a reduction in the protection of workers’ rights.
Those in favour of the new opening hours say the change is needed to protect Geneva shops from competition from canton Vaud and neighbouring France.
But those against say it's not the opening hours that are the problem for Geneva shops – but the prices.
