Back to the federal votes – the political battle lines are already being drawn up on what to do with the CHF 5bn that would have been used on the roads.
Much of the money is already earmarked for roads as its cash collected from fuel tax and the vignettes.
The Swiss People’s Party and the Liberals says tax on fuel must be cut. Left wing parties say it should be used on alternative transport projects or compensating people for damage from climate change – such as the recent storms.
But it’s not that easy. Switzerland has a hypothecated tax system – that money must be used on the roads.
To change that, it will need to go to a vote.
