Parliament is debating whether access to the morning-after pill should be made easier by scrapping the mandatory consultation before it can be dispensed in pharmacies.
Supporters of the proposal say faster access is essential because emergency contraception is most effective when taken within 24 hours. They also argue that some women experience the consultation process as intrusive or judgmental.
But health professionals warn that the discussions can play an important role in identifying issues such as sexual violence, contraception problems or sexually transmitted infections.
The proposal has already passed through the lower house, the National Council, and now goes to the Council of States.
