There are calls in parliament in Bern for tougher election laws to make sure foreign donations can’t influence outcomes.
One MP, Jean Tschopp, says the current law is outdated and provides for a fine of up to CHF 40,000.
He’s tabled a motion which calls for more punishment for politicians who accept money from outside the country.
He points out the EU is considering a fine of a billion euro against the social media platform ‘X’ for its interference in campaigns.
The motion has backing from several other MPs – but they also point out it may not be just cash, but the use of social media to influence decisions.
