Commune will have pay for failed naturalization application

A 46-year-old Syrian man’s attempt to become Swiss is going to cost his commune of Romanshorn in canton Thurgau CHF 50,000.

Talal Aldroubi has been living in Switzerland for the last 12 years – and for the last 5 has been trying to become Swiss.

But his application has always been turned down by his local authority, so he turned to the Federal Court.

The judges backed him and ordered the commune to pay all their costs and his.

He’s also received CHF 8,000 in compensation.

He’s decided to leave Romanshorn, believing he and his new Swiss wife are not welcome. He’s moving to canton Zurich.
