Doctor shortage worsening

Switzerland is facing a serious doctor shortage, yet universities are still turning away hundreds of medical students each year

Demanding first-year selection — including at Lausanne — forces many to repeat the year or abandon medicine altogether.

Those determined to qualify often leave to study abroad, which only deepens Switzerland's reliance on doctors trained in neighbouring countries.

The paradox is widening a gap in primary care at the moment the country needs more GPs, not fewer.
