Water summit continues in Zürich

Around 400 water experts from across Europe have gathered in Zurich this week as drought and pollution squeeze Switzerland's drinking supply

The Swiss EurEau Water Summit opens as two Grisons localities face trucking in water through the winter after their sources dropped sharply, and the Vaud town of Aigle has banned garden watering and shut down its fountains.

About 80% of Switzerland's drinking water comes from groundwater, and rising levels of chemical pollutants are putting pressure on local supply networks.

Delegates will debate so-called sponge-land techniques that help soils and wetlands hold rainwater longer. The main summit day is Wednesday.
