Canton Geneva says it is intending to start once again funding infrastructure projects in neighbouring France.
Geneva was prepared to spend money across the border, until the people voted against a jointly funded park and ride scheme in France eight years ago and under pressure from the anti-frontalier Geneva Citizens Movement Party, or MCG.
But the Grand Council has voted in favour of a joint fund between the canton and France of around CHF 60m.
The money would be used for projects involving health, culture, the environment and transport.
But the MCG’s president, Franciso Valentin, remains against the idea. He says ‘for us, Greater Geneva does not exist’.
But there are splits within the party, another MCG deputy, Thierry Cerutti, says he is in favour of the broad idea - but priority must be given to Geneva.
France is backing the idea of a joint fund.
