The federal government is getting involved with the argument if vegetarian alternatives to meat should be called chicken or pork.
The Swiss company ‘Planted’ produces meat alternatives called planted chicken or planted pulled pork.
Zurich authorities took the company to court arguing using the names may confuse consumers. The court disagreed, citing a study that showed 93% of purchasers knew exactly what they were buying.
But now the Federal Department of the Interior, which oversees food labelling, is appealing to the Federal Court, saying it disagrees with the cantonal court ruling.
It says it believes as more products become available it hopes a ruling by federal judges will give legal clarity.
