A man is taking authorities to court after he claims he was sexually assaulted and raped while in Geneva’s Champ Dollon prison.
The 37-year-old ended up in jail due to an unpaid traffic offence dating from 2018. He says he was stopped for riding a scooter without a licence – but then returned to his home in Brazil and missed the increasingly insistent letters demanding payment.
He was arrested when he returned to Switzerland. The fine has soared to CHF 6,000 and he was ordered to jail.
While locked up he says he was assaulted and no one helped. He says now he’s depressed and rarely leaves the house.
His lawyer says the story shows that people who are not a threat to society should not be locked up.
