Passerelle won't cure problems

As the date for the next set of referendums gets closer, the two sides for and against the new footbridge to run parallel with the Mont Blanc Bridge are putting forward their arguments.

Aside from the cost – around CHF 50m – detractors of the project also say it won’t achieve its aim; to allow for a separation of cyclists, pedestrians and cars.

The new walkway will be that; a walkway for people. But new cycle lanes will be built on the main bridge, as the sidewalks will be closed.

But the problem is at the end of the bridge, at the Jardin Anglais.

It’s feared the area by the Flower Clock will become congested with cyclists, pedestrians and tourists wishing to look at the clock.

Some are suggesting the flower clock be moved – but it’s been there since 1955.

Supporters say bikes can be redirected behind the route along the lake.

Voters will decide on the 24 November.
