The population of canton Vaud will pass one million residents by 2046, according to new demographic projections released Friday
From 864,200 today, the canton is expected to grow to around 1,050,000 by 2055 in the central scenario, with immigration accounting for almost 90% of the increase.
The pace of growth will be roughly half what Vaud has seen over the past 30 years.
The share of over-65s will rise sharply, from 17% now to between 22% and 24% by 2055, as the baby-boom generation retires.
Cantonal finance minister Valérie Dittli called the figures "a genuine compass for public policy".
