There could be a shake up on how the country is run.
The lower house of parliament, the National Council, has voted to accept an initiative which would increase the number of Federal Councillors by two – making a total of 9.
Pressure has been growing for a more representative selection of senior politicians. Currently the formula is two seats each for The Liberals, The Socialist Party, and the Swiss People’s Party and one for the Centre.
There’s no space for other parties – especially the Greens.
For any change to go ahead – the upper house, The Council of States, still have to agree. But ultimately the people will make the final decision.
There’s no date for that vote yet.
