Second wave deadlier than first

Switzerland’s second wave of infections was far deadlier than the first and this country performed badly when compared to our neighbours.

Figures from Johns Hopkins University and analysed by the NZZ show 77% of coronavirus deaths occurred since November last year – while only 19% between March and May. 

While the second wave proved to be worse than the first in many other countries, here excess deaths between November and January was worse than all bordering countries.

But the numbers also show the second wave is ending – with now deaths lower than what would be expected in normal times.
