Sugar beet farmers are facing a disastrous harvest, with drought and extreme heat killing crops before they mature.
The problem is particularly severe in canton Vaud, the biggest sugar beet-producing canton.
One farmer says hundreds, possibly thousands, of hectares could be too badly damaged to harvest — compared with just 30 hectares in a difficult 2023.
And that could eventually push up the price of sugar.
