Swiss nuclear stations want to be declared 'Green'

The Swiss Nuclear Forum, which covers power stations, is calling on the government to follow the EU and declare nuclear energy ‘Green’.

The classification in the EU came in last year and it allows companies investing in nuclear power to issue ‘Green’ bonds.

Environmental groups are currently fighting the designation in court – but a decision has not been reached.

Swiss operators say if this country adopted the same policy, it would widen financing options.

A Finnish operator has successfully raised EUR 280m issuing bonds.

Currently, building new atomic plants in Switzerland is banned. A decision taken after the Fukushima disaster.

But there are growing calls to lift the moratorium, including from Albert Rösti – the federal energy minister.
